BSC Level 1 Certificate
The vast majority of occupational injuries and ill-health can be avoided. With this in mind, the BSC has developed the Level 1 Certificate in Health and Safety at Work, a nationally recognised qualification aimed at all employees. The qualification provides candidates with a basic knowledge of health and safety in the workplace, including the duties of employers and employees under UK health and safety legislation.
The qualification pre-supposes no former knowledge on the part of those who aim to attain it. Candidates will come from diverse educational and employment backgrounds and could work for employers ranging from large multinationals to small businesses. Candidates could also come from schools and colleges. The qualification is approved under Section 96 of the Learning and Skills Act 2000 for learners aged 18 and under. Discounted examinations are available for schools and colleges.
Ideally, employers will deliver the specification as part of a health and safety induction programme, but it could also form part of ongoing training designed to improve the healthand safety culture of an organisation.
The specification is based on the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety and is accredited by the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual) at Level 1 in the National Qualifications Framework. The qualification counts towards school performance figures (6.3 points).
